Actions are judged by their intentions. That includes the hours you spend at your desk before an exam.
Most students wait to feel motivated before they start studying. The trouble is that motivation runs out by Wednesday. What keeps you going after that is a reason worth studying for, a routine small enough to keep, and trust in Allah when the work gets hard. Here are six habits built on those three things, each tied to the Qur’an and the Sunnah.
1. Know why you are opening the book
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Actions are only by intentions, and every person will have only what he intended.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 1, Sahih Muslim 1907, narrated by Umar ibn al-Khattab
A student who studies only to pass gets a grade. A student who studies to benefit himself, his family and the people he will one day serve gets the grade and the reward. The chapter is the same either way. Before each session, take a few seconds to renew your intention, then open the book.
2. Twenty-five minutes a day beats one all-nighter
The Prophet ﷺ said that the most beloved deeds to Allah are those done regularly, even if they are small.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6464, narrated by Aishah
Cramming feels like hard work, but most of it is gone within a week. A short session at the same time every day builds more than a long one you manage twice a month. Choose a time slot you can protect, perhaps after Fajr or straight after school, and keep it on the days you don’t feel like it. Those are the days that count most.
3. Your free time is a blessing, so guard it
The Prophet ﷺ said: “There are two blessings in which many people are cheated: health and free time.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 6412, narrated by Ibn Abbas
For most students today, the phone is the thief. One notification turns into twenty minutes. Put it in another room while you study, and check it at the break. If you need it for a timer, switch it to airplane mode.
4. Close the book and test yourself
Rereading your notes feels productive because the material looks familiar. Familiar is not the same as remembered. After each section, close the book and write down everything you can recall. Then open it again and check what you missed. The gaps you find are exactly what to study next.
As the exam gets closer, move to past papers done against the clock. They show you how questions are actually asked, and how long each one really takes you.
5. Stuck? Do one question, then the next
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Strive for what benefits you, seek help from Allah, and do not be helpless.”
Sahih Muslim 2664, narrated by Abu Hurairah
This hadith puts effort and reliance on Allah side by side. You do your part, you ask Allah for help, and you don’t sit frozen. When a topic feels too big, shrink the task until it is small enough to start. One question, one diagram or one paragraph is enough. Starting is the hardest part, and it almost always carries you into the next step.
6. Ask Allah for more knowledge, and for knowledge that benefits
“My Lord, increase me in knowledge.”
Surah Taha 20:114
Allah commanded His Messenger ﷺ to ask for more knowledge. The Prophet ﷺ also used to seek refuge in Allah from knowledge that does not benefit, saying:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ لَا يَنْفَعُ
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit.”
Sahih Muslim 2722, narrated by Zayd ibn Arqam
Make this du’a before you start. It reminds you that understanding comes from Allah, and that the goal is knowledge you will use, not just marks on a page.
Start with one session today
You don’t need all six habits by tomorrow. Pick one, perhaps the fixed daily slot or the phone in another room, and keep it for a week. Then add the next.
If this helped, share it with a student who has exams coming up, and follow @hikmadaily on TikTok and Instagram for more.
